Sunday worship services at St. John's involve clergy and lay people working together before, during and after the service(s). Our worship services are a community offering to God. From captivating sermons, to behind the scenes Altar Guild members, our worship is enriched by the participation and talent of parishioners of all ages. Music is an integral part of our worship - from the superb St. John's Choir, to organ preludes and postludes played by our committed organists, to the multi-talented Bell Choir, to individual musical offerings. There are many ways one can participate in worship at St. John's. Consider these additional opportunities:
As a Chalice Bearer
Chalicers assist the Rector by serving the sacrament of the wine during the observation of Holy Communion. Very limited training is required. To participate in this ministry, speak with Father Al.
As a Greeter/Usher
This very important group of people are the welcoming committee for newcomers and old members as well. All that is required is a friendly smile and a "Good Sunday Morning" attitude. Don Anderson, coordinator. A brief set of instructions is provided below (Instructions for Greeters/Ushers)
As a Lay Reader
Lay readers serve during our worship by reading from the pulpit the Old and New Testament Lessons, leading the Psalm, and leading the congregation in the Prayers for the People. All are encouraged to participate in this important ministry. Marrie Williams: coordinator
As an Acolyte
This ministry welcomes all youth from 3rd grade on (at the age of 8) up to those aged 99. Training, which is minimal, is held when there are volunteers. Acolytes assist the clergy at the altar during worship services. If this is a service you would like to be part of, contact the church office. Marrie Williams is coordinator.
Children
At St. John's, children participate in worship in many ways. Children may demonstrate their Godly Play stories during the sermon time, they converse with Father Al during the weekly children's sermon (!) and they take part in the Holy Eucharist. The Christian Formation Children's classes also perform the annual Epiphany Pageant during the worship service at the beginning of January each year.
Youth
Youth contribute to weekly worship by writing and reading Prayers for the People as part of their Journey to Adulthood curriculum; by sharing their musical talent or their Pilgrimage or Pine Ridge experiences in sermon presentations when possible.
